Areas are a collection of rooms in a MUD that serve a common purpose. Areas can be cities, oceans, travel routes, private homes or places to adventure in. CoffeeMUD has over 200 areas installed, offering a broad variety of adventuring possibilities. There is a mix of original content and imported areas. Many of the imported areas have been heavily modified to take advantage of CoffeeMUDs many features.

Trails
For assistance finding areas in the CoffeeMUD world, players in-game may hunt down a local concierge and ask for directions. There are three area trail maps available on the CoffeeMUD website:
In addition to these trails, players can make use of in-game Concierges to guide them to areas.
- Krafti in Midgaard
- Erigoneous in Alramus
- Cityguards in Alramus can tell you directions to rooms within the city of Alramus, but not other areas.
- Silarana in Elvenhame
Starting Areas
There are 4 different areas that players may end up when they first create (or remort) a character:
- Cora Isle - Starting area of the fae-related races: Aarakocran, Centaur, Lizard Man, Merfolk, and Pixie
- Magthere Wa`q - Starting area of the deep races: Drow, Duergar, Githyanki, MindFlayer, and Svirfneblin
- Mud School - Starting area of the classic demi-human races: Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half Elf, Halfling, and Human
- Tzbrakas Training Academy - Starting area of the monstrous races and any race not in one of the above lists: Gnoll, Goblin, Orc, and Ogre
Each of these areas may be exited and re-entered through special commands. See the specific area for details on how to leave or be transported to the area. MUD-Born players initial start room is their (birthroom? christenroom? youngadulthood room?) and must use one of the special entry ways to reach a starting zone.

Instance Areas
Instance areas allow a player or group to experience that area without the interference of another player or group competing for kills. Most instances can be reset by going to the start room (that is, the first room of the instance area) and issuing a SAY INSTANCE RESET. This will boot you from the instance and reset all of the mobs and rooms in the instance, and maybe the room layouts and mob-types that you encounter. In CoffeeMUD, the areas with the OF MYSTERY in their title normally indicate an area that has an entirely random layout and contents.

Due to their impermanence, mobs captured, tamed, hired, controlled or otherwise brought from an instance area back to the world will naturally expire when the instance is destroyed, which is generally about 15 minutes after the last player leaves the instance. It is also a bad idea to log out while within an instance area.
