Legal System Basics

Some cities have a codified list of laws for all intelligent inhabitants to adhere to. The legal system identifies who the enforcers of the law (often city guardsmen) will be, as well as a single judge to mete out justice.

How to Commit a Crime

In CoffeeMUD, for a crime to occur, it must:

  • be defined as a law in the given area
  • occur within the area that has the law
  • be witnessed by an intelligent mob within 1 room radius from the crime scene
  • be committed by an intelligent mob (with an intelligence score of 3 or more)

Warrants and Arrests

If a crime is committed and meets all the criteria from How to Commit a Crime, then a warrant for the arrest of the (player or non-player) MOB will be issued. Whenever a law enforcer encounters the criminal, they will attempt to arrest the criminal and take them to the judge for sentencing.

List of Crimes

Each city or area may have their own list of what is a crime and how severe it is to commit a particular crime. The list below is intended to help identify what actions result in the specified crime, if it is against the law in that area.

Crime Definition Notes

Assault Attacking another citizen. In general, to be convicted of assault, you must initiate combat directly or indirectly.
Murder Killing another citizen after assaulting them.
Indecent Exposure Wearing inappropriate clothing, or insufficient clothing. Not wearing pants is often the basis for indecent exposure, although some cities may have other regulations.
